Shooters Sports Center carries Glock 21, Glock 30, Glock 36 and Glock 41 handguns chambered in 45 ACP. Famed for superior stopping power and lethality, 45 ACP is a great choice for, well, just about anything. Glock’s well designed frame makes the normally bulky 45 ACP handgun perfect for concealed carry.

History of the Glock 45 ACP

In 1904, Colt was working on developing a .41 caliber round. In 1905, the US Cavalry requested a .45 caliber round, which would become the 45 ACP. Shortly after the round was developed, a new automatic pistol design was developed to use with the round: the model 1911. Used extensively in WWI and WWII by the US military, the pistol proved itself both in functionality and durability. The Colt 1911 is a popular choice of 45 ACP handgun even today.

In 1990, the Austrian manufacturer Glock released their first 45 ACP pistol, the Glock 21. The small Glock 30 was released in 1997. In 2011, Glock introduced the Glock 36, a single stack concealed carry pistol. Glock then also released the Glock 41, a large frame .45.

Glock 45 ACP vs. 9mm vs 10mm

  • Power: 10mm wins the battle of power, due to the powder load it can hold, but 45 ACP gets second place. 9mm is the least powerful of these three cartridges.
  • Recoil: 9mm has the least recoil, 10mm is the greatest, and 45 ACP sits in the middle.
  • Accuracy: 9mm gets back on target the fastest due to lower recoil, 45 ACP is the second fastest, and 10mm is the slowest to get back on target.
  • Cost of ammo: 10mm is about twice the cost of 9mm, 45 ACP costs about 50% more than 9mm.

Benefits of Glock 45 ACP Pistols

  • Self Defense: Good handgun for self-defense. Although the cost of training is definitely more than 9mm it is still reasonable. The bigger round also allows more energy delivered to the target. The Glock 30 and 36 also provide good options for concealed carry.
  • Range Use: These handguns are a lot of fun to shoot on the range. With relatively affordable ammo, they are also cheaper to train with than other more expensive rounds, such as 10mm.
