History of the Glock 10mm Auto
The 10mm round was developed in 1983 by Colonel Jeff Cooper to improve penetration and power for the FBI. The FBI ended up changing their minds and switching to the 40 S&W because it can be used in smaller weapons due to its shorter length. In 1990, Glock developed the Glock 20, their first 10 mm handgun. In the 2000s, the round has increased greatly in popularity, due to the high power and penetration.
Glock 10mm vs. 9mm vs. 45ACP
- Power: With the proper ammunition, the 10mm has a higher velocity than either the 9mm or the 45 ACP, and with the large bullet, packs a lot of energy. The 10mm is a big, fast round.
- Recoil: The 10mm round does have greater recoil than the 9mm or the 45 ACP.
- Accuracy: Handgun accuracy depends heavily on the individual and the recoil of the 10mm makes it more difficult to use than a 9mm, but with some training, can be quite accurate. The flat trajectory of the 10mm also helps with accuracy.
- Cost of ammo: 10mm tends to cost a little more than 45ACP and is almost twice the price of 9mm.
Benefits of Glock 10mm Guns
- Hunting: 10mm is the preferred hunting round for both medium game and even as a defense against large game, such as bears.
- Self Defense: Good for self-defense for experienced shooters due to the increased recoil.
- Range Use: Fun gun to take to the range.
